Republicans have shelled out $1.8M a month on President Trump’s legal team

The Republican National Committee has been paying $1.8 million a month since the Mueller probe started to reimburse President Trump’s legal team, which has grown in size and influence with each of the recent round of legal developments.

That spending appears to be just a fraction of what the president is likely spending out of his own pocket on the cases, according to Bloomberg. As the party pays the attorneys, the president’s legal team has grown in size and influence with each of the recent round of legal developments.

The RNC isn’t disclosing the exact amount it’s spending per month, but it has paid between $500,000 and $1 million a month since November to accounts linked to Trump.

The network has also paid legal fees for other Republicans. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring and former Gov. Bob McDonnell have all received payments from the legal team.

“The RNC spending more than it’s bringing in to fund legal and general lobbying efforts is totally inappropriate,” Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican, said in a statement to Bloomberg. “This team doesn’t need more members and more committees funding them; they need a better plan.”

Trump’s legal team is led by Rudy Giuliani, who joined shortly after Mueller’s appointment as special counsel in May. His legal bills have exceeded $1 million during the course of the investigation so far, The New York Times reported.
